In the Kitchen with Martha
/Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
Here we have a great story of two women, neither doing anything wrong or sinful, but one choosing the better thing ... or what I would say is "the better portion." I have heard many preachers rail on Martha for being busy (or distracted) in the kitchen with all that needed to be done to feed the group of people gathered in her home. She was just trying to be a great host ... she was trying to hospitable (which was very important in their culture!)
What Martha was missing while in the kitchen is what a lot of us miss in our busy "distracted" lives ... TIME AT JESUS FEET!
I encourage you to STOP sometime today and sit at Jesus feet ... do it while co-workers (or you) go on a smoke break! Be with Jesus!
